Top 10 Tips for Buying a Home

  1. Contact a lender to get a pre-approval letter if you are financing. 
  2. Know your credit score
  3. Be aware of the all of the expenses of buying a home – movers, application fees, etc.
  4. Know the difference between a condo and a co-op. Co-ops are typically have more restrictive rules and are not typically purchased by investors because you can’t rent them out. They are also subject to co-op board approval requirements, but tend to be less expensive than real property ( Condo ).
  5. Find a real estate agent who is competent and knows the area. Interview multiple agents and find one that you’d like to work with. 
  6. Don’t overpay. Be aware of what the property’s true value is. A good real estate agent can supply you with comparable properties to help you make an educated and wise decision. 
  7. Imagine your future in the home. Make sure it is really the right one for you. 
  8. Verify the listing information you’ve been provided with is accurate. A discrepancy on monthly maintenance or taxes can be a costly!
  9. Walk around the neighborhood and get a feel for it. 
  10. Have a limit in mind for your budget so that you don’t get in over your head.
