Top 10 Tips for Buying a Home
- Contact a lender to get a pre-approval letter if you are financing.
- Know your credit score.
- Be aware of the all of the expenses of buying a home – movers, application fees, etc.
- Know the difference between a condo and a co-op. Co-ops are typically have more restrictive rules and are not typically purchased by investors because you can’t rent them out. They are also subject to co-op board approval requirements, but tend to be less expensive than real property ( Condo ).
- Find a real estate agent who is competent and knows the area. Interview multiple agents and find one that you’d like to work with.
- Don’t overpay. Be aware of what the property’s true value is. A good real estate agent can supply you with comparable properties to help you make an educated and wise decision.
- Imagine your future in the home. Make sure it is really the right one for you.
- Verify the listing information you’ve been provided with is accurate. A discrepancy on monthly maintenance or taxes can be a costly!
- Walk around the neighborhood and get a feel for it.
- Have a limit in mind for your budget so that you don’t get in over your head.
